TRIBUTE TO THE 70 WOMEN, OLIVE PICKERS OF CALVIÀ, WHO LEAD A STRIKE TO CLAIM THEIR RIGHTS IN 1932
The event took place at the newly named Plaza de las recolectoras de aceitunas, 1932 in Calvià
The event of homage to the olive pickers of Calvià, who in 1932 lead a strike in Calvià, to claim their right to receive the same salary as men, and who now have a square in the village that commemorates this historical event, has taken place this afternoon.
The event began with the reading of the strike's Manifesto, by the Calvian actress María Antònia Torrens, who has also made the dramatised reading of a fragment of the book “La vaga de les collidores d'Oliva de Calvia, el 1932 ”(The strike of the olive harvesters of Calvià, 1932), by Manel Suárez and a gloss that, mockingly, was published in the weekly magazine "Foch y Fum", on the events that led to the strike. The deputy mayor for Youth, Citizen Participation, Environment, Ecological Transition and Democratic Memory, Rafel Sedano, wanted to highlight the importance of making known historical events, unknown to many people, as in this case the one starred by “70 brave women of the municipality who raised their voices to demand an equality that, today, does not yet exist. Stories, he added, of women and people of the popular classes that are not known until a historian recovers them.
Then the author of the book, Manel Suárez, and Maria Duran, a relative of one of the collectors and promoter of the memory of this historical event, intervened. The tribute ended with an open turn of words to the attending public. The event was also attended by the councilwoman of Calvià, M. Carmen Rojano, the councilwoman for Youth, Citizen Participation, Environment, Ecological Transition and Democratic Memory, Marga Plomer, the deputy mayors of Calvià Town Hall, Juan Recasens and Marc López, and the MP Antonia Martín.
