Music: Entorn magazine protagonist

Wednesday 7th October 2020

THE NEW ISSUE OF THE ENTORN MAGAZINE ANALYSES MUSIC AS A SOCIAL, CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC DRIVING FORCE IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF CALVIÀ

The School of Music, the tourist industry, public policies and the most relevant musical figures are the axes of the informative publication

Calvià Town Hall launches a new issue of the municipal magazine Entorn. It is number 11 and it is dedicated in a monographic way to music in the municipality. The publication has amongst its contents original articles written by professionals that review aspects such as the history of the music school, the choir, the band and the opera, the relationship of music with the tourism industry, public policies, and the great figures of music in Calvià. It also offers interviews with: Antonia Rubio, a singer and 'ball de bot' (Majorcan traditional dancing) teacher; Pablo Sanllehí, the drummer of Los Bravos; Chenoa, a singer; and Toni Fernández, an expert in musical recordings. Other topics are also discussed in depth, such as the songs of oral tradition in Calvià and Capdellà at the beginning of the 20th century, the healing power of music from the experiences of Asdica (Association of People with Disabilities of Calvià) and the IES Bendinat with teenagers during lockdown, the musical programmes of Ràdio Calvià, or the young promises of music in the municipality. The historical context together with the lockdown experience offers a vision of a municipality in which music has always been very present. In fact, the Calvià Entorn Magazine has space to deal with everything from religious music, hymns, singing as a protector of Covid-19 to industrial music.

It is worth highlighting the variety of authors who have participated in this magazine and the combination of professionals and academicians: Josep Oliver, musician; Bàrbara Duran, musicologist; Arnau Reynés, teacher and organist; Bartomeu Canyelles and Joan Pons, historians; Aina Ramis, journalist; Baaldo, artist; Ignasi Pons, audiovisual culture teacher; Claudia Nagyivan, singing teacher; Pep Díaz, radio broadcaster and producer; Jordi Amengual, youth facilitator; or Víctor Moragues, expert in digital sound.

The 'Entorn de Calvià' magazine was recovered in 2013 and at this stage it was decided to focus each issue on a specific topic. Most of the content is written by the Town Hall staff, who provide unpublished material and data of interest to better understand the municipality of Calvià today and its future prospects. Topics such as the environment, art, the architecture of the territory, gastronomy, cinema, tourism, women, the sea, sports and migrations have been dealt in previous editions.
