This Friday, 9th October, the 1st Calvià Democratic Memory Conference will begin with the presentation of Tomeu Garí's book La repressió feixista a Mallorca durant la Guerra Civil i la posguerra (The fascist repression in Mallorca during the Civil War and the postwar period), in Sa Societat.
This is the first activity scheduled for the first edition of this Conference that will be presented on 23rd October at the Es Generador youth building, where an exhibition will remain under the title Memòries. The presentation will be given by Dr. Margalida Capellà, an expert in the investigation of crimes against humanity and the forced disappearances of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime.
The conference emerged as a tool for remembrance and repair within the framework of the second anniversary of the opening of the Calvià pit, eight decades after some of the most serious and well-known events in the municipality. The objective is to create a space for reflection, based on analysis studies and discussion tables, around the most tragic events in the municipality in the last century.
The Deputy Mayor for Youth, Citizen Participation, Environment, Ecological Transition and Democratic Memory, Rafel Sedano, has indicated that “the Calvià Democratic Memory Conference should serve to remember the people who suffered and died in defense of democracy and avoid forgetting what the Spanish Civil War really was and the repression that followed. We must remember and do pedagogy, he added, of what a fascist dictatorship is and its consequences and confront democratic values with totalitarian brutality. Knowing the past to continue moving forward.
On Saturday 24th October, at Sa Societat de Calvià, the historian Manel Suárez will give a presentation under the title La repressió franquista. Calvià com a exemple (Franco's repression. Calvià as an example), which will lead to the presentation of the book by David Ginard Ateu Martí (1889-1936). Next, the forensic anthropologist Francisco Etxeberria will give the presentation Verdad formal, verdad real... Verdad Oficial. The day will close with a round table with the participation of Manel Suárez, Francisco Etxeberria, Maria Antònia Oliver from Memòria de Mallorca, and the forensic archaeologist who directed the exhumations of the Calvià cemetery, Almudena García-Rubio.
The activities will end on 25th October with a visit to the Calvià cemetery, guided by Almudena García-Rubio, and a visit to the Porreres cemetery guided by Tomeu Garí. In the evening, at the Peguera Auditorium, the theater play Antígones 2077, by Aina de Cos, directed by Montse Rodríguez, will put the end of the 1st Calvià Democratic Memory Conference.

Due to the situation derived from Covid-19, to take part in the activities it is necessary to register before.
