Fca. Pujol Terrassa street plaque inauguration

Tuesday 12th April 2022

FRANCISCA PUJOL TERRASSA, THE FIRST ENTREPRENEUR WOMAN IN MAGALUF, HAS NOW A STREET WITH HER NAME

Today the plaque was inaugurated with the presence of her relatives

Today the plaque that gives name to Francisca Pujol Terrassa street, a pioneer businesswoman from the municipality who opened the first bar in Magaluf, was inaugurated in an act that was attended by the mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal; the councillor for Democratic Memory, Rafel Sedano; the councillor for the Magaluf area, Marc López, and other authorities, such as the mayoress of Esporles, Maria Ramon, the island councillor for Local Development, Jaume Alzamora, and other members of the Calvià Town Hall government team, as well as relatives and neighbours of the municipality.

This change of nomenclature culminates what was approved by Calvià Town Hall's Plenary Session, on 29th April 2021, to change the name of three streets that still retained the Francoist nomenclature, at the proposal of the Technical Commission for the nomination and labeling of Calvià streets, once the report presented by the Town Hall's Democratic Memory department has been assessed.

The name of Francisca Pujol Terrassa replaces that of the Francoist General García Ruiz. Francisca Pujol (Calvià, 1916-2003) worked in the fields throughout her childhood and adolescence, until at the age of 28, already married, she moved to sa Porrassa. She was a businesswoman and an enterprising woman who first ran two bars: the one that was the first bar in Magaluf, "Bar Magaluf", opened in 1954, and later the "Bar Puerto Rico", opened in 1956. Later, together with her husband, she founded the “Bar Criollo” and the “Pensión Pujol” on Son Maties beach. Thus, Francisca Pujol was a hard-working and enterprising Calvià woman who made Magaluf part of her life.

The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has pointed out that recovering the history of Calvià is very important, and that "at a time when the truth is beginning to be something revolutionary, it is necessary to strip the names of streets from people who, at the time, did not deserve it, and to recover honor and dignity by naming the streets after people who were the essence of Calvià that we have today». «It is important to know where we come from -he added- and to keep in mind some people, who, like the case of Francisca Pujol, built our municipality».

The councillor for Democratic Memory, Rafel Sedano, who opened the event, thanked everyone for their presence. «We talk about peace, harmony and justice -he stated- because today the change of the Francoist names that were in the municipality culminates, with the inauguration of the plaque with the name of a businesswoman and entrepreneur. This way -he has said- we recover women's spaces and leave behind a stage in Calvià's history».

On his behalf, Antoni Pallicer, who spoke on behalf of the relatives, commented on the figure of Francisca Pujol Terrassa, explaining that she came from a humble family and how she had the vision to realize that "the winds that came were those of the tourism, being the first businesswoman in Magaluf».

During the event, the young Calvià musician Sergi Tous performed the Cant dels Ocells and What a wonderful world.
