Descriptions and Phases

In the Tumulus at Son Ferrer a series of different structural elements have been documented. Overall these elements are:

Period of modern time.
Situated in the upper part of the tumulus, and composed of rows of stones lying on their side and in an oval circle. The existence of cultivated fields in the region, as well as the appearance of modern time glazed ceramic, confirm this hypothesis.  At this moment this period isn´t visible, as it was dismounted during the excavation process.

Upper quadrangular structure.
Formed by a series of tombstones one inside the other, that form two squares. On one side of the tumulus there is a tirad exterior line which surrounds the other two, despite not having been totally conserved.

Exterior rings.
Lines of stones which surround the upper quadrangular structure.  A minimum of two have been identified at the tumulus, even though in order to fit in with the irregular relief of the fossil dune on which the tumulus is constructed, it could be three or four.

Adjacent walls and rooms.
Situated in the  S-SW slope of the tumulus. It seems that in modern times a room was constructed next to the tumulus, so that the peasant could leave his agricultural tools.  At the same time there are the remains of a series of walls that we haven´t been able to establish their reason.

Gaps in the tumulus.
They are present in the  SW area of the tumulus. There is a gap in the fossil dune that permits access to the entrance of the artificial cave.  At the present time it is in the process of excavation and it hasn´t yet been possible to establish neither its exact shape nor its dimensions. It must be pointed out its use as a place where burials were carried out mainly children, inside urns and ceramic containers.  Furthermore there is a gap that was made between the two most exterior rings of the tumulus and that was used for the placing of the urns and amphoras containing human remains, probably of the same type as those found in the pit at the entrance of the cave.
