Due to the proximity of the Christmans festivities, the Calvià Town Hall has joined the “Special campaign for the control of alcohol levels in drivers”, promoted by the General Traffic Division, which will take place between 12th and 18th December.
The Local Police of Calvià will develop a special police activity during all these days, carrying out continuous controls with the use of breathalyzers in all residential areas and locations of the municipality and at any hour of the day or night.
The Calvià Town Hall is aware of the importance of the improvement of the traffic security and to reduce, even more, traffic accidents in our Municipality. One of the most influential factors in traffic accidents is driving under the effects of alcohol, a fact that we have to try to avoid, especially these days in which family celebrations and company lunches and dinners are taken place.
Some important aspects to have in consideration are:
In almost a third part of fatal accidents, alcohol is present as a trigger factor.
Alcohol is not only related to a higher rate of accidents, but also has an effect on a higher rate of mortality, as being a factor related with a worse forecast in injuries suffered.
Even though alcohol rates are inside the law, our risk of suffering a traffic accident can increase.
The only secure rate is 0.0%
Although we think we are secure and in right of mind with the ingestion of alcohol, we are multiplying the risk of suffering an accident.
We have to be consistent: Prevent drivers who have drunk, not to take the car. And never accompany a driver who has taken alcohol.
The percentage of positive tests detected in the preventive alcohol level controls has reduced during the 2005-2010 period, standing at 1,0%-1,2%.
In the 8% of the alcohol tests carried out because of an accident, the result came out positive.
Since the reform of the Penal Code for excess speed and alcohol came into force on 2nd December 2007 until 31st December 2010, 50.101 people have been detained for driving with an alcohol rate categorised as an offense.
