The consumption of alcohol in the public way will be banned and it is expected that the police will be provided with more legal tools to sanction the excesses of the tourists.
The Magaluf´s Tourist Season Follow-up Comission has given the green light today to the entry into force, during the forthcoming tourist season, of a civic bylaw similar to the one applied by the Palma's Town Hall which expects, amongst other matters, to prohibit the consumption of alcohol in the public way and sanction both, the excesses of the tourists in the streets and the possible cases of the so commented balconing. The agreement has been achieved at the meeting held this afternoon and which has counted with the presence of, amongst others, the Mayor of Calvià, Manuel Onieva, the Consistory's Socialist Spokesperson, Alfonso Rodríguez, the President of the Hotel Association of Palmanova and Magaluf, Sebastián Darder, the responsibles of the representative entities of the complementary offer of Calvià, FETUR and ACOTUR, Luís Marín and José Tirado, respectively, the head responsible of the Association of Discoteques of the area, Jesús Sánchez, Fernando Luengo and Mari Carmen Navarro of the Taxi Drivers Association of Calvià, as well as representatives of the Guardia Civil of Palmanova, the Local Police of Calvià and other municipal departments such as Calvià 2000, Commerce or Maintenance.
During the course of the meeting, the Mayor made public to the attendees the report written by the Municipal Legal Services in which it is detailed the legal inability of the Town Hall to prohibit the Pub Crawling activity given that it has to be a superior body, the Regional Government or the State , who legislates the matter. For this reason, the comission has decided to reiterate to the Regional Government the formal petition on the subject which already was made in November last year and which counted with a negative response by the Regional Ministry for Tourism. For the representatives of the different associations present at the meeting and the Town Hall it is essential to find a solution to this problem before the beginning of the season, with the aim of providing the Local Police the legal tools which achieve to erradicate totally the ethylic excursions in the tourist areas. In this sense, the socialist spokesperson, Alfonso Rodríguez, stated that if in the end this activity has to be regulated by the Town Hall because it cannot be prohibited, it should be done "with more restrictive measures than the current ones" to which Onieva firmly promised.
In fact, the common objective of this gathering is no other than to achieve agreements which allow to guarantee to the limit the security and quality of the services received by the tourists who visit Magaluf, thus improving its image as a holiday destination towards the national and international markets, a very damaged image after having suffered a very difficult and negative Summer, particularly from the media point of view.
The gatherings of the Magaluf´s Tourist Season Follow-up Comission will continue to take place regularly during all this year 2015 and, in fact, the next meeting is expected for within three weeks. In said meeting, it is expected the revision of other municipal bylaws such as the Police and the Good Governance, which date from 1990, with the aim of adapting them to the current necessities of the municipality.
