CALVIÀ ACQUIRES THE STATUS OF 'ALLIED MUNICIPALITY OF THE CHILD FRIENDLY CITIES PROGRAMME'
The Universal Children's Day is celebrated today, 20th November.
The Calvià Town Hall, through the Social Welfare Service of the Department of Social Cohesion, wants to take advantage of this day to make the children's rights known to the citizenship.
The United Nations General Assembly approved, on 20th November 1989, the international treaty which came into force on 2nd September 1990, and which under the title Convention on the Rights of the Child gave legal nature to the rights of the minors: http://www.unicef.es/infancia/derechos-del-niño
At the same time, aware of the importance of working to achieve the welfare of all the boys and girls of the municipality, the Mayor of Calvià Alfonso Rodríguez Badal has signed the document of accession as ALLIED MUNICIPALITY OF THE CHILD FRIENDLY CITIES PROGRAMME which the Unicef promotes.
By the signing of this document, the Calvià Town Hall is committed to undertaking projects and actions which contribute to promote the participation of the citizenship, children included, in childhood and adolescence local policies, thus building the alliances and networks with the different sectors of the society in favour of the childhood, according to the principles and regulations of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The signing of this document gives the municipality of Calvià the status of "Allied Municipality of the Child Friendly Cities Programme" of the Spanish Committee of Unicef, and allows to start working to achieve the seal of 'Recognition of Child Friendly City'.
Calvià also attended the IV Children's Parliament of the Balearic Islands which the UNICEF organises along with the Defence Office of the Children's Rights, where the children are the protagonists. The Deputy Mayor for Social Cohesion, Nati Francés, the Councillor for Social Welfare and Senior Citizens, Mayte Albertí, as well as the Director General for Social Policies and Equity, Ana Pérez, attended the event.
