Institutional statement on the occasion of International Women's Day
INSTITUTIONAL STATEMENT
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
ALWAYS AGAINST SEXISM
We commemorate 8th March with the festive and reivindication character that International Women's Day involves.
This year we make our concept of United Nations on substantive equality that consists in converting the nominal equality of our laws to real equality. To achieve it, we must act on three interrelated areas: correct the socio-economic situation in which many women find themselves, fight against the sexist stereotypes and all forms of gender violence, and work to strengthen the representation and participation of women.
To achieve the substantive equality, is not only necessary to do more, but also do better. This do better has a starting point: confront problems and call them by their name, and face solutions and call them by their name.
The problem is called discrimination, inequality, patriarchy. A problem that is increasing. Recently, all gender cracks have widened, dozens of women are killed every year and also increases every year the number of children killed, children of abusers. The sexism discourse runs at street level, the harassment to feminists and defenders of the women's rights have become habitual. There have been many attempts to eliminate the ideological consistency and the political and intellectual tradition of feminism, as well as its very long social struggle.
It's time to speak up and provide solutions.
Smoke and confusion are not, should not be, political instruments. Since those years when the first and modest quotas of 12% of participation were achieved until make reality the concept of parity, the work for the equality has been constant. In this way, we have had many successes: the Comprehensive Law against Gender Violence, the Equality Law, the Law on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy, the same-sex Marriage Law, the Dependency Law, the Concilia Plan, the 0-3 Education Plan and the implementation of the coeducation. They are achievements that we remember with emotion, with pride.
All laws, all progresses, were decisive steps towards a fairest and worthy society. They were changes that improved the lives of people, which improved our society.
Therefore, besides the pride that we have conquered, our conviction drives us to continue claiming and proposing solutions that begin to include equality as a priority action which, also, extends transversely to the rest of political actions.
Always against sexism means, boost a great Institutional, Political and Social Covenant against gender violence, a State Pact that achieves to eradicate the most extreme manifestation of inequality.
Always against sexism means to bet on an economy of Equality that eliminates the barriers to access to employment, the continuity and the promotion, to end the income gap and the historical obstacle of the idea that women take responsibility, almost exclusively, of the care of relatives.
Always against sexism means that there is no democracy without women. We want a parity democracy, a participatory democracy that is necessary to make a new social pact that includes women. A Gender Pact involving the recognition of full citizenship and aims at achieving the balanced representation between men and women in all areas, in all institutions.
Always against sexism includes to put an end to prostitution and human trafficking for the purpose of sexually exploiting them, manifestations of gender violence. Includes working on the eradication of one of the cruelest and hope that the last forms of slavery.
Always against sexism includes building a coeducational system to ensure training in gender equality between both sexes at all levels (from pre-school to university), that incorporates the interests, knowledge and history of women in the curriculum; to provide an affective-sexual education that includes the gender perspective from the first cycles and that shows how to resolve conflicts in a peaceful and non-sexist way, so that is the best prevention against gender violence.
Always against sexism means defending the freedom of choice of women on motherhood, recognize and respect the sexual and reproductive rights.
Democracy can not disappoint women
We want a society of men and women who can dream of making real their vital projects, their professional projects, can have the possibility to decide what they want to study, where they want to live, what kind of family they want to build, who they want to love, how they want to get their happiness. We want a society where women live free from violence. A society that we will build, without frauds or disappointments. A society in which no one is left out, in which no one is left behind.
Always against sexism
