THE LOCAL POLICE OF CALVIÀ WILL PERFORM A SPECIAL POLICE ACTION THIS WEEKEND AGAINST THE STREET-DRINKING PRACTICE
The Local Police of Calvià, coinciding with the Festes del Desembarcament, will perform an alcohol and detection of drugs or banned substances control this weekend. This control will be intensified on Saturday night coinciding with the concert to be held at la Pinada de Santa Ponça (Sta. Ponça pine wood) to avoid the street-drinking practice known as "botellón or botellones".
As a result of the control and pressure on the leisure areas, the Local Police of Calvià has managed to almost eradicate this practice. A total of 137 reports been filed by the Local Police officers for drinking alcohol in the street in groups and causing discomfort.
In addition, during the months of August and the first week of September, the Local Police has conducted 6 scheduled alcohol and drug detection controls, with more than 150 drivers checked, with a result of 12 positive alcohol tests and 5 drivers positive for prohibited substances.
This is not a one-time activity, but such controls are being constantly carried out in leisure areas and surroundings of the municipality.
The Local Police of Calvià has taken as one of its strategic objectives to mentally prepare, deter and, if necessary, prevent youth from alcohol and drugs.
The methodology practised by the Local Police, is based on three aspects:
-Prevention, increasing significantly the presence of police units in areas susceptible to crowds of young people near leisure areas. This action is based on informing on the alcohol-ban, and having constant police presence with the aim of avoiding accumulations of young people who tend to gather to practice of the "botellón".
-Secondly, in case of not obeying the instructions of the agents, the Municipal Ordinance that provides penalties of around 400 euros has been applied .
-And lastly, as a deterrent on the consumption of alcohol and drugs, the alcohol and drug detection controls have increased- the Local Police of Calvià is one of the few ones having these modern detectors- in places and times where young people gather and meet up in the municipality.
