THE LOCAL POLICE OF CALVIÀ AND CALVIÀ 2000 HAVE LOCATED 10 OFFENDERS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST ILLEGAL DUMPING IN PUBLIC SPACES

Penalties can reach 1,7 million euros in case of very serious infringement

The summer campaign to detect breaches of the municipal ordinance for the collection of municipal waste and cleaning of public spaces has resulted in the location of 49 cases of uncontrolled dumping.

In all cases, the waste has been removed by Calvià 2000 operators in less than 24 hours. As a result of the investigations, the Local Police has been able to clarify the authorship of 20% of the detected cases, with a total of 10 offenders, and the corresponding sanction files have been initiated.

The total of discharges from 1st June to November 2016 has been 49. Santa Ponça is the area in which there has been a greater number of waste disposal in public areas and spaces, with 10, followed by Peguera, where there have been 8 dumpings, and Son Ferrer, with 5. The area of Cala Falcó is where the most important dumpings have taken place from an environmental impact point of view.

In the campaign for locating and investigating infringements, Local Police personnel, Calvià 2000 and the Environment Department are participating actively and in a coordinated way. With these actions, the Town Hall aims to avoid unconventional behaviors, improve public areas and improve the quality of life of citizens and visitors of the municipality.

The infringements in these cases are classified as serious and very serious, and authors can be charged with penalties ranging from 901 to 45,000 € in the case of serious, and from 45,000 to 301,000 € in the case of very serious infringements.

Waste disposal could also violate Law 22/2011 on waste and contaminated land, which establishes fines in the case of very serious infringements (disposal entailing a serious danger or damage to human health, serious deterioration of the environment, hazardous waste or landfill in protected areas), from 45,001 to 1,750,000 euros.
