Calvià, fourth entity in Spain and first municipality in paper and cardboard collection and recycling
Collection exceeds 46 kilos per inhabitant, more than double the national average
Calvià has risen to the top of the classification of municipalities, municipal associations, consortia and entities of towns with more than 50.000 inhabitants in Spain in figures for paper and cardboard collection and recycling. The latest data analysed and published by ASPAPEL (Spanish Association of Paper Pulp, Paper and Cardboard Manufacturers) places the municipality as the fourth entity behind the Consortium of Waste and Energy of Menorca, the Commonwealths of Pamplona and San Marcos and the Grouping Consortium.
Calvià takes fourth place, the first as a municipality, with 46,37 kilos of paper and cardboard per inhabitant, 6 kilos more than in 2021 and above the national average of 20,59 kilos. Paper and cardboard from municipal selective door-to-door collection, blue containers and clean points are counted. This has awarded Calvià with three Pajaritas Azules.
Mónica Fantini, Environmental Projects technician at the public company Calvià 2000, has pointed out the importance of continuing to improve selective collection figures to "make Calvià a sustainable and environmentally friendly municipality." «These are not empty words –she added –, from Calvià 2000 we take recycling very seriously. We have demonstrated this with the magnificent results of paper and cardboard and also with those of glass. Another important point of our management is wastewater treatment and how we use regenerated water for irrigation of public areas. And all this is possible thanks to the workers of Calvià 2000 and the involvement of residents and companies in the municipality.
ASPAPEL is a state-level professional organisation that brings together companies in the paper pulp and paper sector. The associated companies (about 48) account for more than 90% of the sector's production. The promotion of recycling is one of the strategic objectives of ASPAPEL, which launched the 'Tu papel es importante' project in 2002 and subsequently the 'Tu Papel 21' programme, a system for diagnosis, implementation of improvements and certification of selective municipal paper and cardboard collection., renewed in 2016 with the name Pajaritas Azules · Tu papel 21 Municipios.
The programme won the European Paper Recycling Award in Brussels in 2007, which rewards innovative projects to promote paper recycling in Europe. The jury was made up of members of the European Parliament and European Commission, associations (Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling and Sustainable Resource Management, ACR+) and NGOs (WWF International).
