Calvià starts up a conservation project for this species, in the gardens of the Galatzó public estate

Over 10 wild tortoises are set free on the Galatzó.

 

Calvià Town Hall has started up a project for the conservation of wild tortoises (Testudo graeca), this is a threatened species of the natural fauna of the Balearic islands.

This refuge will be situated in the gardens of the main building of the public Galatzó Estate.


This project came about during a scientific assesment from the Herpetelogical conservation centre. This new centre takes in the species which are found and donated by the public, and it acts in the interest of protection and welfare of the tortoises. At the centre the tortoises are assesed and checked for health by biologists Once it has been established that they are satisfactory they are tagged for identification and set free into parts of the municipality where there presence is diminishing. In order to carry out the project the centre works in tandem with the species protection services which forms part of the Balearic Government, and who offer the information as to where the tortoises should be set free.


Additionally, this project forms a key part of an awareness raising and education programme for children of school age. In order that the students become aware of the measures that need to be taken in order to overcome the threat to the species and to contribute to their conservation.
