Calvià Police manage to phase out of ticket touts and street sellers on the beaches in 2008. In residential zones and at points of conflict, some 460 more preventive controls took place than in 2007

Reduction in more than 1.000 charges with respect to 2007 for street sale of perishable products; interposition of 100 charges to ticket touts; increase of administrative procedures related to prostitution on the streets, and an increase in prevention measures. All reflect the balance of police activity during last summer.

Above all, this permanent service is to guarantee the safety of residents of Calvià and the thousands of tourists that visit the municipality each year.

Local police made a special effort last summer in three areas: resident safety, the fight against street sellers and the application of a rule regarding publicity in public areas.

It is important to note the increase in preventative measures taken mainly in residential areas where they had been an increase in robberies and vandalism. For example in Peguera, measures were doubled in relation to 2007.

In Bendinat there were more than 130 measures almost 200 in Son Caliu and Palmanova, 211 in Santa Ponça and 100 in Son Ferrer and El Toro.

In 2008, 1.249 measures were taken. That signifies 464 more than 2007.

The results of said controls signifies an increase in the number of charges for drug use in public places: 154 in summer, and a greater number of arrests were made. In the summer months 320 were arrested compared to 234 in summer 2007. Also, 45 people were arrested for public health offences.

With regard to the law pertaining to street sellers, particularly on beaches, which was approved in 2007, it should be noted that a mere six charges were made in comparison to 1.204 in summer 2007 and 4.447 in 2006.

Efforts by the local police of Calvià have made the difference. Last summer no arrests were made for street selling, and no files were opened for this activity.

Finally, one of the main parts of police work involved applying rules regarding publicity in public places such as via ticket touts. In the first year of the new ruling there have been 108 charges and this activity has practically disappeared from the street. In addition, two business premises were closed down due to incompliance with these rules.

Last year, the 092 emergency number for local police in Calvià received 7.027 calls in summer and a total of 13.240 from January to October. 29% of these calls were for residence safety, 25% for traffic problems, 19% for general assistance and 2% for emergencies.
