Big day for the Local Police of Calvià to recognise the work of the 200 men and women who make up the force. The Day was celebrated on Thursday in the Sala Palmanova of Calvià with the presence of the mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, the first deputy mayor responsible for Security, Esperanza Catalá, and the head of the Local Police, Esther Ribas, together with other authorities, from the Civil Guard, the National Police, police officers from other municipalities, the Army and Civil Protection. Amongst others, the Government delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez, and the Regional Minister of Public Administrations, Antonia María Estarellas, attended the event. As a novelty, the Beach Unit has been announced to be reinforced for the next tourist season, with surveillance drones and plainclothes officers.
A total of 59 crosses and congratulations have been awarded. The police merit crosses with a blue badge - fulfilling one's duty at risk of the person demonstrating exceptional courage, loyalty and self-denial - have been 2; and 17 crosses with a green badge - exceeding with notoriety and perseverance in the duties of the position. The public congratulations have risen to 40. Retirement diplomas have been awarded to 11 officers. Members of the National Police, the Civil Guard and Civil Protection of Calvià have also been distinguished.
The pursuit of illegal street vending has generated around 900 sanctions. 370 arrests have been made, the most frequent motivated by alleged crimes against traffic safety, public health and property. 15 people have been assisted by performing cardiorespiratory resuscitation; more than 150 fires have been successfully intervened, some of them serious, with risk to people. In addition to ensuring compliance with the Municipal Ordinances and the Responsible Tourism Decree Law, drawing up around 3.500 reports. For the first time in years, the upward trend in the evolution of the number of requests made through calls to 112 or 092 has been broken, halved compared to 2023.
Amengual has addressed the police officers to celebrate that "you have made the Local Police the example to follow and the envy of other municipalities. We have numerous residential areas, the floating population can triple during the high season and you are asked to do a lot to keep at bay those who think they can come to Calvià to disturb the order and commit crimes," he concluded.
For her part, Esperanza Catalá has insisted on how the Calvià Police "makes the difference": "one does not stop being a police officer when one takes off the uniform at the end of the shift. I know that many times you take home the psychological burden of a job that ends up affecting you on a personal level. It is the price to pay for those who make the difference." "We cannot measure the success of our Local Police only by the number of arrests or actions carried out. The real success is the confirmation that Calvià is, with each passing year, a safer municipality," she added.
