- The collaboration also allows access to new management tools for the pet census and facilitates municipal work in the animal welfare's area
Calvià Town Hall and the (COVIB) Official College of Veterinarians of the Balearic Islands have signed a collaboration agreement this Wednesday to implement the new functionalities of the Pet Identification Registry of the Balearic Islands (RIACIB). Through this agreement, which will be extended to other municipalities, local councils will be able to access a modernised system that facilitates the pet census management, as well as the monitoring and control of the municipality's cat colonies.
These agreements allow local councils to use advanced management tools, such as real-time census queries, license allocation, tracking of abandoned or unregistered animals, and, especially, the activation of a specific module for cat colonies. This module allows you to register colonies, identify and register cats, manage sterilisations and vaccinations, and always know who the responsible veterinarian and the assigned caretaker are.
This system, developed and managed by the COVIB, is part of the agreement that the entity signed with the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Natural Environment in October 2024, with the aim of strengthening the public management of animal welfare with efficient and unified technological tools for all the institutions involved.
Access to these functions by local councils involves an annual financial compensation, calculated based on the number of inhabitants of the municipality, and a nominal fee per microchip unit in the case of colony cats. The prices have been approved by the Monitoring Committee of the framework agreement with the Regional Government. With this collaboration, the COVIB strengthens its role as a leading entity in the management of the RIACIB and enables local councils to carry out their animal protection responsibilities more efficiently, safely, and in a coordinated manner with veterinary professionals.
