Applications should be submitted during the month of June, and the grants will be paid in August, before the new term begins
The residents of the municipality of Calvià, with children in Infant School, Primary & Secondary (obligatory) will benefit, once again, this year 2009 from the grants for purchasing text books, which have been given by the Calvià Town Hall for the last four years, via IMEB (Instituto Municipal de Educación y Bibliotecas – Department of Education & Libraries). As in previous campaigns, applications should be submitted during the month of June, and the grants will be paid at the end of August, before the books are purchased.
Calvià Town Hall was the pioneer of the Balearics with this initiative for the 2006/2007 term. That year 3.533 families benefited from the grants. The figure progressively increased during the two subsequent campaigns - 3.675 families in the second year, and 3.765 in the term which is almost over.
The Mayor of Calvià, Carlos Delgado, on numerous occasions, has declared his intention to continue with these grants until such times as the Ministry of Education decides to do so , as he considers it a priority to help families to pay the costly expense of text books. Once again, Calvià stands out from other Town Halls, such as Palma, who not only does not give grants to pupils in Secondary education, but has announced that the amount paid to Primary school pupils is being reduced.
The grants, which range from 35 to 65 euros in Infant School to between 110 and 150 euros in Primary Education to between 200 and 225 euros in obligatory Secondary Education, help families with the huge expense they are met with when the schools return after the summer holidays. During the course of the three campaigns undertaken until now, Calvià Town Hall has paid out a total sum of 2.191.540 €.
Applications can be submitted between 1st & 30th June in the Education Dept. (IMEB) at the Town Hall, and also in the registration dept.
