284 foreign residents of Calvià complete the free Spanish lessons organised by the Town Hall
This morning, the Mayor of Calvià, Carlos Delgado and the Deputy Mayor for Foreign Residents, Kate Mentink, presented diplomas to the 284 foreign residents of Calvià, who, this academic year 2008/09 attended and completed the free Spanish lessons provided by the Town Hall.
The courses began back in 2003/04 and since then have had an exceptional response from possible participants. The first year 190 pupils attended, and this figure has gradually increased reaching the sum of 482 pupils who enrolled this last year.
The courses were divided into two modules, and were held in Es Generador (Palmanova), the CUC (University Centre) of Bendinat, the Centro Cultural (Cultural Centre) of Santa Ponça, the IFOC of Magaluf, the Colegio Público (primary school) of Bendinat and the Casal of Peguera. As in other years, there were three different levels. Of the total of 284 pupils who finished the course, 184 were basic, 86 intermediate and 14 advanced.
Besides the classes and conversation groups, the pupils have taken part in various extracurricular activities, such as an excursion with 131 pupils to the finca pública Galatzó (Galatzó public estate), and a guided visit to Palma with 63 pupils.
The intention of the Town Hall, which is presided by Mayor Carlos Delgado, is to continue this initiative into the next term and increase the number of foreign residents participating, with the objective of helping the integration of all in a municipality as cosmopolitan and diverse as Calvià.
