This year the XXIII Ri en Jauem Yacht Race- IV López Raigal Trophy, between 11th and 12th of September, has permanently recovered its original route between Salou and Calvià
La XXIII “Rei en Jaume” yacht race - IV Trophy López Raigal will begin this year on Friday, 11th September, in Salou and will finish the following day, Saturday, 12th September, in Calvià. According to the pre-inscription, it is estimated that the event will bring together approximately 20 vessels, representative of the most active fleets of the Catalan coast (costa catalana) and the Balearic Islands.
This year, thanks to the continued joint efforts of the Town Halls of Calvià and Salou, the regatta has permanently recovered its original route between the Tarragon municipality of Salou and Calvià.
This route, across the open sea, already undertaken last year, was used until 2002. This one day event was, at one time, a clearly defined sporting event for lovers of navigation in open seas, and within a very short time became an emblem in the sailing community, gathering together the country's experts in this type of race. In 2002 it was decided to end the sporting connexion, which had begun in 1987, between the two councils. This competition was organised in celebration of the conquest of Mallorca, and followed the identical route taken by King James Ist and his troops in 1229, disembarking at Santa Ponça after a first port of call on the isle of Pantaleu, just off Sant Elm.
Thus the XXIII Rei en Jaume regatta will set sail from Salou on Friday, 11th September, and after a 110 mile journey the participating vessels will reach Santa Ponça throughout the course of Saturday, the 12th. On the same day an additional regatta , of about 15 nautical miles, will take place along the coastline between Puerto Portals and Santa Ponça, in the hope of encouraging as many Mallorcan boats as possible to take part.
The regatta is exclusive to RI vessels and is organised by the nautical clubs of Santa Ponça and Salou, the Yacht Racing Club of Puerto Portals (CRPP) and sponsored by López Raigal Construcciones y Promociones S.L and the Town Halls of Salou and Calvià.
