Inscription period for new term of Spanish classes for foreign residents opens
On 1st September the inscription period for the new term of Spanish lessons for residents of other nationalities opens. The application period will finalise on 11th September, and places will be allocated according to the order in which applications are submitted. The documents to be submitted along with applications are:- passport or identity card (original + photocopy), registration (green) certificate for EU citizens or "residencia" card (original + photocopy), and certificate of "empadronamiento de primera residencia" (proof that you are registered as living in Calvià) for "clases de castellano" (Spanish lessons) - available from Calvià Town Hall or Calvià Tourist Information Offices. Students who completed the 2008-09 course, and filled in the inscription paper during the last few days of class do not need to re-inscribe. The new 2009-10 term is due to begin on Monday, 21st September and will run through to May next year.
The classes were first introduced back in 2003/04 and have been a huge success ever since. The first year, 190 students attended and this figure has gradually increased, reaching 482 during the 2008/09 courses. In 2004/05 133 students participated, 153 in 2005/06, 223 in 2006/07 and 181 in 2007/08. In total 1.362 foreign residents have attended Spanish lessons.
