New art exhibition in Calvià.

The exhibition centre at Calviá Town Hall is hosting an exhibition until 25th February. The Association of artists who paint with their mouths and feet are showing 35 original works painted by their members.

The objective of this exhibition is to showcase these works of art, in order that people can appreciate and enjoy their artistic quality and originality. One of the aims of the Association is that members can make a living from their hard work and efforts by selling products such as Christmas/greeting cards, calendars, paintings, puzzles, books, etc., all copied from the original works painted by their mouths or by their feet. The importance of this exhibition to demonstrate these original works to the public, who will no doubt be fascinated by the artistic value.

The Association of artists who paint with their mouths and feet was formed in 1957 when artist Erich Stegmann, a Polio victim, along with a small group of disabled artists from 8 European countries created a self help group. Their common goal was to make a business of their work by reproducing their original artwork. The results of this initiative came to be a worldwide artistic movement, currently with a presence in 74 different countries and some 800 members.

In Spain the Association was founded also in 1957 when Stegmann met artist Manuel Parreño Rivera, who became the first Spanish artist to join the Association. The headquarters is located in Madrid where promotion and distribution of works of art from all over the country is managed.

It should be noted that any person who has lost the use of their hands and who can paint by holding the paintbrush in their mouth or with their toes can join said Association. There are 3 levels based on artistic prowess, students, associate members and full members.
