Spanish lessons resounding success.

The Mayor of Calvià, together with the Deputy Mayor for Foreign Citizens, Esperanza Català, Councillor Kate Mentink and the municipal spokesman, Manuel Onieva, has presented, this morning, the diplomas to the 270 foreign citizens living in Calvià, which have attended and completed, this year, the free Spanish lessons offered by the Town Hall.

Said lessons , started back, in 2003 fulfilling an electoral promise. Since then, the number of pupils who have enrolled has increased and this year a new record has been attained 698 pupils enrolled of which 637 were accepted and 270 who completed the course.

The courses have been arranged as in previous years, depending on the level of proficiency. Thus, three levels have been established: basic, intermediate and advanced and the lessons have been held at the Casal de Peguera, Casa de Cultura de Santa Ponça; IFOC in Magaluf; Es Generador; the AAVV (neighbourhood Association) in Portals and at the Primary School Migjorn in Bendinat.

The government team is delighted with the success of these classes which are another example of the various events organised by the Town Hall to facilitate integration in a municipality where a total of 109 nationalities coexist . With this aim in mind , the Town Hall created, in 2003, the Department for the Foreign Citizen which celebrates yearly Europe Day and Integration Forums.
