A ton and a half of waste materials have been taken out from under the seq after another cleaning session, organised by the town hall through its municipal "Calvià por el clima", office

Portals deep sea cleaning success.

From Calvià Town Hall, through its municipal office "Calvià por el clima", (Calvià for the climate), and in collaboration with the Shark divers voluntary group, took out from under the sea and coast lines in Portals Nous and Costa d'en Blanes beach, a ton and a half of contaminating waste materials, in another cleaning session, last Saturday.

Eight tons of contaminating waste materials have already been taken out from under the sea, in previous cleaning sessions.

A group of 10 divers and a civil defence vessel participated in the cleaning works which started at 10'00 hours. The vessel took out from a point close to the coast, the waste materials which were previously taken out from under the sea by the "Shark" divers, and collected afterwards by a Calvià 2000 lorry. Once the cleaning works were completed, the company , La Alacena de Mallorca, invited all the voluntary participants to an aperitif.

Batteries, wires, electric constituents and sunk vessel elements, were found in between the removed waste materials, which could cause danger for navigation. It is to be reminded that the deep sea cleaning programme has as prior objectives, two cleaning sessions per year. One, before the high tourist season and the second one, after, in order to alleviate any possible environmental damage and to improve its tourist attractiveness. Four cleaning sessions have been organised, on the municipality beaches, (including last Saturday), since the creation of the "Calvià por el clima" office, with a total sum of nine tons of residues collected.

This last deep sea and coast line cleaning session, was framed within the World's Environment Day celebration which, this year, was dedicated to the deep sea and coast lines conservation and protection. For its commemoration, the Town Hall also organised the "Agenda Local 21", III School Forum, on Sta. Ponça beach, last Friday. This event consisted of a talk and a deep sea cleaning practice in order to make the 100 pupils who participated, aware of the significance of the protection and conservation of the coast lines and deep sea. The schools which participated, put up on the beach, an exhibition of the environmental schoolworks, made during the present year.
