The Spanish Olympic Committee´s President, Alejandro Blanco, visits together with the Mayor, the athlethics track in Magaluf, the rugby pitch and the heated swimming-pool in Son Caliu
The Spanish Olympic Committee´s President (COE), Alejandro Blanco, visited the municipality of Calvià last Tuesday to have first-hand information about the sports facilities network which has made this municipality an ideal destination for sport lovers and active tourism.
The COE´s maximum responsible person was accompanied by the Barceló Hotels & Resorts managing director, Raúl González and the chain´s general director for the Balearic Islands, Africa and Middle East, José Canals. All of them were received by the Mayor, Carlos Delgado, who together with the Deputy Mayor for Sports, Manolo Grillé, the manager for the Calvian Sport Institute (ICE), Manuel Onieva and the Tourism General Director, Jaime Martínez, showed the complete sports map which the municipality uses, created with the aim of Calvià being an International reference in the practice of sport and in the organization of big sports events.
The COE President visited the athlethics track and the natural turf football pitch in Magaluf and later, the new rugby pitch, also fitted-out for the practice of football, and the new indoor swimming-pool in Son Caliu, facility which soon will open its doors, to know “in situ” these two new sport complexes which are the star elements in all fairs and promotional events to which the Town Hall attends.
Firstly, they visited the athlethics track, which has made Calvià a privileged destination for the practice of this sport throughout the year. Since its official opening, the track has held the Junior Spanish Chamionship, the Absolute Athlethics Championship on the Balearic Islands and the XXIV Promise Spanish Championship. In between the different sport schools that use the track , the daily users and the National athlete groups, it is estimated that about 200 people daily use this facility.
After emphasising the quality of this new complex, which consists of an athlethics track with covered stands beside the main track; a natural turf football pitch, a covered training area,an exterior circuit for cross-training and a gymnasium; the attendants, went to the new rugby pitch and the new indoor swimming-pool in Son Caliu , which soon, will be opening.
The Mayor showed this complex “in situ” and the attendants could see for themselves, the quality of the construction and the magnificent place where it is located. The new rugby pitch, which has already had a magnificent welcome from various rugby clubs and teams from Wales, Scotland and Ireland, where the Mayor has had the chance to promote the facility, measures 112x67 metres, it is provided with state of the art artificial grass and 70 mm of fibre glass and stands. Also there is a service buiding with changing rooms with capacity for four different teams at a time; the referees´s changing rooms and the social center. The heated swimming-pool measures 25x12,5m and it is provided with changing rooms, rest rooms and offices.

28,5 million euros investment in sport facilities of six heated swimming-pools, eight artificial grass football pitches and eleven sport tracks
Since 2003, the Town Hall has made an investment of 28 million euros to provide the municipality with the most complete and modern sport facilities network.
At present, in Calvià, apart from these two big complexes, a total of six indoor swimming-pools; two outdoor swimming-pools; six artificial grass football pitches; 2 (football 7) artificial grass football pitches; 11 sport tracks; tennis courts, paddle tennis, frontón, basketball and a skating rink; various rooms for fitness and monitored activities, as well as a municipal sailing school in Portals and an olympic and police shooting gallery at the Son Bugadelles industrial estate.
