The Town Hall has been pioneer in the Balearic Islands within the development of a strategy to fight the climate change which has, between its main objectives, the 20% reduction of its CO2 emissions for 2020
The Mayor Carlos Delgado presented, on Thursday, the actions carried out since 2007 within the Strategy “Calvià for the Climate”, as well as mentioned strategy´s main objectives until 2020, which basically reduce to 530 kilotonnes the CO2 emissions, a 20% less than what was emitted in 2007, according to the information obtained from the inventory carried out by the “Calvià for the Climate” office. In this sense, it is to be highlighted that, Calvià has been the first and the only municipality in the Balearic Islands carrying out this inventory, which has enabled to detect the number of emissions and their origin.
The main actions carried out by the Town Hall within the Strategy “Calvià for the Climate”, during the last four years, are as follows:
Creation of the “Calvià for the Climate” office. The “Calvià for the Climate” office was created in 2007, due to an electoral promise, in order to coordinate all the actions within this matter. Calvià became, therefore, the first municipality in the Balearic Islands provided with this kind of office. The office headquarters is located in the Galatzó Public Estate. It is directed by Jorge Campos, bachelor in Law and master´s degree in environmental management by the University of Valencia, together with Pablo de la Peña, bachelor in Law and master´s degree in environmental management by the University Carlos III in Madrid. In 2008, Calvià joins the “Cities for the Climate” Spanish network .
Reforestation of the Galatzó public estate. In 2007, the IBANAT, in collaboration with the Town Hall, carried out a reforestation action, in which 31.200 pine and holm oak trees were planted. In March 2008, more than 300 children, from different schools in the municipality, participated in the event "Plantemos un árbol en Calvià" (Let´s plant a tree in Calvià) in which 130 trees were planted.
COPRANET Project. In 2009, Calvià obtains the European acknowledgement for the tourist and coast line areas good environmental management, becoming therefore, in the second Spanish municipality awarded with this distinction, together with Fuerteventura.

Weather observatory. It started in 2009, with the installation of two weather stations: Santa Ponça (Puig de sa Sirvi) and Finca Galatzó. They offer different parameters (temperature, precipitation rate, atmospheric pressure, etc.) about weather information, updated every 4 hours, in the one located in the Galatzó public estate and real-time updated, in Santa Ponça, which also gives service to the nautical club.
Costa d'en Blanes selfprotection strip. Carried out in 2010, consisted of a 2,5 km firebreak.
Agenda Local 21 School programme. Programme pioneer in the Balearic Islands which started in 2007. It is an environmental and sustainable management education programme carried out in seven schools: Cas Saboners, Migjorn, Jaume I, Galatzó, Puig de na Morisca, Ses Rotes Velles, Puig de sa Ginesta. Calvià is the first and the only municipality carrying out a CO2 emissions inventory in the Balearic Islands, giving as a result, a total of 663,65 kt (kilotonnes) of CO2 emissions, in 2007, which means the 6,28% of what the Balearic Islands emit. Between 2007, when the first inventory was carried out, and 2009, a 2,23 % decrease in the CO2 emissions is registered, in Calvià.
Street lighting saving. Energy efficiency improvement in all areas in the municipality, with a 23% reduction in the street lighting consumption during the last five years (2005-2010), which has meant an accumulated saving of 325.000 euros, with an accumulated decrease in emissions of 2.000 Tm (metric tonnes). Carried out actions: replacement of mercury steam luminary lamps (VM) by high pressure sodium steam ones (VSAP), installation of LED (light emitting diode) innovative luminary lamps, light flow control systems and remote management systems.
Natural gas and renewable energy sources. 7,22% increase in the number of natural gas subscribers between 2007-2009, which has meant a 13% consumption increase. Natural gas is a 30% less pollutant than residential diesel oil. CO2 emissions annual saving: 360 Tm. Calvià has been pioneer within the use of biomass boilers in the municipal facilities (Peguera and Santa Ponça swimming-pools). It is stipulated a saving of 40.000 euros, yearly, with regards to the diesel oil boiler and a reduction of 116 Tm of CO2 emissions every year per facility. There are 152 thermal panels and 168 photovoltaic panels in the municipality, which produce a total of 415 Kwh/year.This means an annual reduction of 240 Tm of CO2 emissions.
Other actions. A total of 6.604 on-line procedures were carried out in 2010, which could be quantified in the reduction of 8 Tm of CO2 emissions / year . The invoices digitalisation system has allowed the Town Hall to stop emitting 150.000 paper documents /year in 2010. The elimination of individual hard disks and their replacement by centralized servers also allows a 10 times less consume. 100 equipments of this characteristic have been installed in the Town Hall, during the course of 2010, with a reduction of 3,4 Tm of C02 emissions /year. The local police will incorporate two motorbikes and six LPG vehicles at the end of this month, with a reduction of 30 Tm of CO2 emissions/year.
