Due to its good job made, the Town Hall was awarded yesterday with a special mention at the Fundación Fórum Ambiental Sustainable City Awards

The jury assessed, the following points:

  • The environmental strategy arised and ratified on paper and with facts towards the forthcoming years, specifically until 2015.

And two specific projects, such as:

  • The street lighting energy efficiency project, through which the Town Hall pays, as of today, 325 thousand euros less than what it was paying in the 2005 annual´s invoice and emits 2000 tons less of CO2 into the atmosphere.

  • The installation of biomass boilers at the indoor swimming-pools of Peguera and Santa Ponça which mean a saving of 33.000 euros in each facility´s invoice and stop emiting 250 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The Calvian consistory, in this sense, has been working within this strategy of fight against the climate change, for a long time, and it was in 2007 when the Calvià for the Climate Office was created. In that same year it joined the Red Española de Ciudades por el Clima (Cities for the Climate Spanish Network) under the authority of the FEMP Federación Española de municipios y provincias (municipalities and provinces Spanish Federation), organization which its main objective is to establish both, the most necessary and effective actions within the fight against the climate change and the support to a sustainable development in the whole country.

Also, just a few days ago, the Calvià Town Hall joined the Mayors Agreement, which means in between other things, beat the European Union´s objective of reducing a 20 % the CO2 emisssions before 2020. The local and regional authorities which have assumed the volunteer commitment of improving the energetic efficiency and using reneweable energy sources in their territories, participate in said Mayors Agreement.
