A delegation of the Calvià Town Hall, headed by the Deputy Mayor for Environment, Miquel Bonet, was present at the inauguration of the "Ca s´Amitger", the Serra de Tramuntana´s natural reserve interpretation centre, yesterday morning; which now opens its doors to the public once the refurbishment and enlargement works, carried out by the Regional Ministry of Agricultural, Environmental and Territorial Affairs, and "La Caixa", were finalized. The project, which has been totally financed by the financial entity, has had a cost of around 1,9 million euros.


The Serra de Tramuntana´s natural reserve, consisted by 62.403 hectares of land and 1.123 hectares of sea, is one of the most valuable places on the Balearic Islands. The centre of Rebrote, in the middle of the Serra, is one of the most visited places and the starting point of numerous itineraties and excursions in the whole Serra de Tramuntana. All these visitors, specially tourists, demanded the possibility of having an information service and an environmental interpretation centre like the one which has just been inaugurated.


The Serra de Tramuntana´s natural reserve interpretation centre is located in “Can s'Amitger”, a country house built in the 16th century, which for many years was property of the Rebrote´s Sanctuary. The centre was opened for the first time in 1995 and the refurbishment and enlargement works started in 2008, which were taken up again in June 2010.


The building consists of, 2000 square metres distributed in three floors, counts with an information office and an audiovisual presentation in which the Serra de Tramuntana, its location and other characteristics, are presented. The aim of this presentation is, transmit to the visitors the impressions and feelings which the Serra de Tramuntana causes; let know of the natural reserve´s characteristics, explain the history of the human´s presence; the current and the traditional life at the properties and at the Serra de Tramuntana; highlight the literary and artistic references which the location has inspired; promote and explain the initiatives of the sustainable development and with regards to the traditions.


An interpretation centre is an equipment aimed at accomplish the services of reception, information and interpretation with regards to the protected natural spaces, their natural and cultural values and management, as well as of guidance to the visitors through the public information given. Both, information and interpretation are provided, either with a personalized service or with visual exhibitions.
