The Municipal Corporation of Calvià in the ceremony in memory of Diego Salvà and Carlos Saenz de Tejada, commemorating the sixth anniversary of their death by terrorist attack.

The Municipal Corporation of Calvià has attended the event in memory of Diego Salvà and Carlos Saenz de Tejada, six years after their death by a terrorist attack.

The event, which was attended by the family of Diego Salvà, commanders of the Guardia Civil, local police of Calvià, representatives of the Government Office, representatives of hotel associations and traders of Calvià, and friends of both victims, the mayor Alfonso Rodríguez Badal has dedicated a few words in memory of the two young Guardia Civils, after which the attendees have kept a minute of silence. The event ended with a wreath offering on behalf of the Town Hall.

Comming up next we repeat the words spoken by the Mayor.

Authorities, Plenary of the Corporation, members of the Guardia Civil, ladies and gentlemen.

Six years ago, barbarism, injustice and cruelty came together in this place by a cowardly action wanting to impose ideas by way of terror.

Six years ago, here, a cruel terrorist action broke two lives, the ones of Carlos and Diego. It shattered the lives of their families, it cut the coexistance of Diego and Carlos with all their colleagues and friends, and shook the conscience of everyone: those in the municipality like Calvia, accustumed to having the presence of the Guardia Civil here, those in the community of the Balearic Islands, and those in the country of Spain.

Anger and indignation gave way, days later, to the sad consolation of “hopefully they'll be the last ones” and shouting “Enough!”

And so it was. The lives that were taken from us on 30th July 2009 were the last ones, and legality was imposed over terror thanks to the good work of the Security Forces of the State. Democracy prevailed, and prevails today over the authoritarianism of those who by force were trying to intimidate a nation, especially the Guardia Civil and the Security Forces of the State. They came up against a brick wall because courage, bravery and the unity of all democrats was imposed.

Today Calvià pays homage to Carlos and Diego and the Guardia Civil. Today the Balearic Islands highlight their work and courage. Today Europe recognizes their efforts and we all recuperate their memory.

Memory, remembrance, is actually another form of life. You well know and often repeat that “death is not the end". Jorge Manrique said in the 15th century that to earthly life and eternal life we could add what he called the life of fame, which is none other else than keeping in memory and remembrance those who live in us by the impact of our actions.

Today in this tribute, reviving the flame of their memory, remembering them for their life and bravery, Carlos and Diego continue to live their life of fame amongst us, both in our memories and in our hearts.

This simple act is to honor their memory. May these words be heard in their ears as an echo from all peoples of Calvià, who are today grateful for their service.
