The Calvià Town Hall opens a process of reorganisation of the Local Police, with the aim of going towards a police closer to the citizen: the Community Police.

The first Deputy Mayor responsible for General Services and Security, Andreu Serra, has announced that the first phase of this reorganisation has just started with the announcement of a post for Police Chief of Calvià. The main aim of this open call, to which can apply Majors and Commissioners of the Balearic Islands is, to provide the municipal police corps with a consistent structure. It is due that the Police Chief can be appointed by the end of September.

With the introduction of the Community Police, it is expected to guarantee the permanent presence of a stable police working team and recognizable in their corresponding territorial fields of influence, as well as a greater and better knowledge of the reality and the specific problems of each one of them. This way, spaces and communciation channels will be created with the social fabric (neighbours, associations, businessmen, public representatives, etc.), offering a total security service and favouring the improvement of the citizen's welfare through a continuos, direct, personal, effective and quick attention to their requirements and necessities.

The start-up of the Community Police will mean a series of structural changes, one of which will be, for the first time, the division by areas: 2 sectors will be created, which will hold 9 areas of the municipality (4+5).

The specific functions of the Community Police will be:

  • The permanent surveillance and total attention to the requirements of the citizens.

  • The continuos personal contact with the neighbours, traders and visitors of their corresponding area, with the aim of knowing their necessities and requirements.

  • Create the conditions for the continuos improvement of the security and the life quality of their corresponding areas.

  • The start-up of preventive action programmes within the Public and Road Safety fields.

  • The processing and follow-up of the deficiencies and faults of public spaces and ways of their corresponding areas, providing at all times proposals of improvement.

  • Participate, within the scope of their competencies, in the different activities generated by the social groups of their corresponding areas.

  • All their competencies' functions, in the different activities generated by the social groups of their corresponding areas.

  • All the functions of their competency according to what is stipulated in the legislation in force.

T
he municipal government team expects to, with this reorganisation, promote the Local Police as a municipal public service, increasing their activity aimed at the prevention and resolution of problems. That is to say, walk towards a police with a more preventive standpoint rather than reactive.

In this sense, the Deputy Mayor for Security has pointed out that, nevertheless, and despite the competencies of each security corp will be clearly defined, the Community Police will continue collaborating with the Guardia Civil, in the Estate's security force competencies, when required. In fact, they have been working closely and in an extraordinary harmony, with periodical meetings held by the officers and the responsibles of both corps.
