- Workforce remains at around 200
- The average age of officers has dropped, and vacancies due to retirement are covered
- Work is being done to prevent crime and incivility to continue the downward trend in 2024
Changes in the Calvià Local Police workforce. On Wednesday, 20 agents, 6 officers, and 1 sub-inspector took office as permanent civil servants. The new officers have taken up their positions at the Town Hall. With these recruits, the number of 200 officers remains for the upcoming high tourist season.
One of the objectives is to ensure—as it has been done up to now—a response time of less than 10 minutes for priority calls: disturbances and fights, assaults, fires, medical emergencies, missing persons, robberies, thefts, suicide threats, and rescues. The Local Police are already working on summer operations that will focus on beach and crowded areas security, fighting against drug trafficking and other illegal activities on the street, and controlling traffic through deterrent alcohol and drug tests.
It is worth noting that the trend in Calvià is—according to Local Police data—a decrease in incidents. Thus, in 2024, the Local Police switchboard at 112/092 recorded 15.130 requirements from 1st January to 30th September, lower than the 32.682 in 2021 and the more than 41.000 in 2022 and 2023. During the same period, 556 alleged crimes were reported, resulting in 283 arrests. The total of 556 criminal proceedings for the period is lower than the 634 in 2023 (a 12.3 percent decrease).
According to the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), the average number of local police officers is considered to be one for every 667 inhabitants. With a registered population of approximately 53.000, Calvià has an above-average workforce capable of handling the security challenges of a population of 133.000. This is due to the fact that during the summer months, peaks of a floating population of up to 148.000 people per day are estimated. It is during these times that efforts are redoubled and close collaboration is established with the Civil Guard, which also allocates additional personnel to Calvià during the summer.
