THE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON THE POSIDONIA OCEÁNICA HAS STARTED

Boats that are moored will be informed and family workshops will be held on the beaches

The awareness campaign on the Posidonia Oceánica which the Calvià Town Hall launches, through the Natural and Urban Environment Department, along with Cruz Roja (Red Cross), Apnea Mallorca, Imedea, Marineland and the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, with the collaboration of Civil Protection, has started.

This is a programme that will take place during the Summer months and that consists in informing boats to anchor in the areas about the dangers that threatens the Posidonia Oceánica related, mostly, by human action. They will be given some leaflets that have been published in which recommendations are also offered, and in which it is invited to make responsible moorings. Participants in this activity will move by kayak, paddle surf or other type of boats.

Also, in parallel, environmental awareness workshops will be held on the beaches.

These activities will be carried out by Cruz Roja (Red Cross) and Apnea Mallorca. This latter entity will even help crafts, through diving, to place the anchor out of the seagrass meadows.

The beaches of Calvià in which the campaign will be developed are: Magaluf, Palmanova, Portals Vells, Santa Ponça and s'Oratori.

Imedea has been in charge of providing training to the volunteers, and Marineland has assumed the realisation of information brochures that have been published in four languages.

In the presentation of the campaign, the Mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, thanked the participation of all participating entities, and wanted to highlight the work being done in the municipality to preserve the seabed, as this campaign will complement the seabed cleaning that takes place during the Summer, along the entire Calvian cost line. He has also remarked that from the Town Hall the commitment to the protection of the natural heritage is firm, recalling that it has been requested to the Regional Government to expand the Marine Reserves declaration, which will multiply by nine the protection of the seabed of Calvià's coast line.

The presentation of the campaign was also attended by Marc Ayats, of the First-aid, Emergencies and Environment Department of the Red Cross; the Director of Imedea, Jorge Terrados; and Mari Carmen Sánchez and Miguel Ángel Puertas, biologist and supervisor of Marineland, respectively.

On behalf of Calvià Town Hall, the event was attended by the Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Trade and Urban Planning, Antonio García Moles; the Councillor for Trade Activities and Environment, Francisca Muñoz; and the Councillor for the area of Magaluf, Alfonso Molina. The campaign's explanation has been carried out by the technical assistance of the Urban and Natural Environment service, Kika Sánchez.
