INFORMATIVE TALKS ON THE TIGER MOSQUITO

The Calvià Town Hall organises three informative talks so that the citizens of Calvià can adopt measures in the private sector.

The Calvià Town Hall, within the frame of the environmental education programme conducted by the Environment Department, has organised three informative talks on the tiger mosquito in the municipality.

Through the company LOKÍMICA S.A., various talks will be given with the aim of showing the citizens how to distinguish this species, know their life cycle, identify their potential breeding areas and know how to prevent the mosquito's proliferation. The workshops will be held during the months of August and September, in three different areas of the municipality, that can reach the maximum people as possible.

Last year, the Calvià Town Hall already gave a talk addressed to the citizens of the municipality, because, regardless of the treatments that from the Town Hall are conducted in public areas for the control of the tiger mosquito's population, it is essential to achieve the modification of risk domiciliary habits through public awareness.

Reminder of general measures to prevent their presence in private areas:

Owing to their habits the most important is to prevent egg laying and growth of their aquatic larvae in small accumulations of water. Therefore we recommend to:

Avoid accumulations of water, clean and remove the fallen leaves in drainage areas or pipes (perform periodic cleaning of gutters, ditches or other elements where water can accumulate or that can slow down the water course).

Empty exterior containers that can collect water, twice a week, and take measures to prevent the accumulation of water, covering or placing upside down buckets, plant saucers, drinking fountains ...

Remove rubbish and waste such as abandoned tires and other objects.

Close and seal manhole covers and septic tanks, place mosquito nets in vents.

Place mosquito netting or fabric seal to prevent them entering wells and cisterns and using them as a shelter.

Treat gutters, ponds, drains or pools out of use with larvicides or disinfect.
