THE CALVIÀ TOWN HALL PROMOTES THE UPDATING AND ADAPTATION OF THE ANIMAL WELFARE ORDINANCE, GIVING GREATER IMPORTANCE TO THE ANIMALS WELFARE, THE COEXISTENCE WITH THE PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE AWARENESS OF A RESPONSIBLE TENURE

The proposal includes contributions from entities and professionals related to the animals welfare. It presents some novelties such as the control of feline colonies

The Calvià Town Hall will present in the next Plenary session the modification of the Municipal Ordinance on animal welfare and tenure of animals living in the human environment, dating from 2006, to update and adapt it to the reality of today.

With this amendment it is expected to update the principles of respect for the animals included in the text and give greater importance to the welfare of animals and improve their coexistence with the people and the other animals in the human environment. It also aims to promote awareness of citizenship, establishing a pattern of general conduct that promote responsible ownership by animal owners, aimed at reducing the inconvenience that may be caused to other people who live, work or visit our municipality.

One of the novelties gathered in the proposal promotes the responsible control of feline colonies or the obligation to identify and castrate domestic cats if they have access to roads or public spaces (the ordinance differentiates the feral cat before the domestic cat). Another novelty introduced is the authorisation of the presence and movement of dogs on beaches without exploitation during the off season. It also regulates the minimum care that animals must receive regarding the treatment, hygiene, care and transport, and the rules on their stay in specialised establishments, healthcare, commercialisation and sale.

The new Ordinance also contributes to the goal of increasing sensitivity and respect for animals, establishing a pattern of general conduct that favours responsible ownership by animal owners, aimed at reducing the inconvenience that may be caused to other people who live, work or visit our municipality.

The proposal has received contributions from various social actors of the municipality who have a close relationship with the animals welfare, such as animal rights associations and foundations, professional organisations, veterinary clinics and civil society.

In the line posed by the new Ordinance, the Town Hall has performed actions and improvements in the municipal pound facilities such as provide shade to all the facilities where the animals live, the replacement of pumps and the wash of the water tank, the replacement of sewage pipes, the cleaning and painting of the facilities walls, repair the treatment plant, extend the opening hours to the citizenship, improve the health and socialisation of the dogs, or provide training for workers, amongst others.
