BALANCE OF THE LIFESAVING AND RESCUE SERVICE ON THE BEACHES OF CALVIÀ IN THE 2016 SUMMER SEASON
The Son Maties beach of Palmanova has served as scenario for the act of recognition to lifeguards and to take stock of the 2016 season.
The Mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has highlighted the work they do jointly with other entities and departments of Calvià Town Hall (Local Police, Environment, Calvià 2000, Maintenance Service, Roads and Works, Coastline, etc.) to maintain beaches in good conditions not only from the safety point of view but also from the services provided and the cleaning and environmental care point of view.
The municipality of Calvià has a security lifeguard service or reactive lifeguards on 20 of its beaches.
Throughout the season, periodic practice drills have been carried out in collaboration with the Local Police, the 061, the municipal ambulance, Coastguard, etc., which has been a basic key in the training of first responders allowing them to be ready to act in any situation or incident.
The operational coordinator of Civil Protection of Calvià, Manuel Barné, explained that during this season there have been a total of 1.187 interventions, of which 1.118 have been for mild causes and 69 have been severe. Of these, a total of 62 people have been evacuated conscious and 7 unconscious. The performance of the rescue and emergency services has led to an effective and rapid response, reducing the numbers of dead people regarding last season. There have been three deaths on beaches, and they managed to recover more than 15 people who had a serious or very serious diagnosis.
All beaches where there is a municipal concession count from this year on a semi-automatic defibrillator, so they are cardioprotected beaches, in addition to other health services such as first aid kits and oxygen therapy equipment. In addition, they have counted on an emergency ambulance service, hired during beach hours, composed of a doctor, a nurse and a medical assistant, which has made possible that the response times to emergencies have gone to have an average of 5 minutes.
The Mayor, together with the Deputy Mayor for Security, Andreu Serra, and the Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Antonio García Moles, have delivered the acknowledgments during the ceremony which was attended by members of the Municipal Corporation, beach licensees of the municipality, as well as representatives of the hotel associations and traders (ACOTUR).
