THE TOWN HALL REISSUES TWO AGREEMENTS FOR THE CELEBRATION OF SPORTS EVENTS IN 2018 TO DIVERSIFY THE TOURIST PRODUCT AND EXTEND THE SEASON
Three football tournaments will be played in the municipal facilities of Santa Ponça and a Rugby tournament on the beach of Magaluf
The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has reissued two collaboration agreements for holding new editions of the 'Mallorca Football Tournaments' and 'Mallorca Beach Rugby'sporting events, which will take place during the month of May 2018 in Santa Ponça and Magaluf.
The municipal facilities of the football pitch of Santa Ponça and the beach will host three football tournaments between 3rd and 7th May, and between 10th and 14th of the same month of 2018, involving more than a hundred amateur teams, and officials of police forces, firefighters, armed forces, customs, ministries and town halls, coming from different countries around the world, mainly from Europe. The last edition, which took place last spring, involved more than 2,000 people.
On the other hand, the rugby tournament will take place on 5th and 6th May 2018 and will be played on the beach of Magaluf. Approximately 70 teams are expected to participate, most of them British, Spanish and the rest of Europe. In the last edition there was a notable increase of women's teams, which were more than 30% of the participating teams.
The average stay of the football tournaments that have been carried out to date has been rising to be at present in 6.5 days on average. On the other hand, the average stay of the participants in the rugby tournament is around 4 days.
Both tournaments reinforce the image of Calvià as an ideal holiday destination for the sports practice in the different European tourist markets. The Town Hall bets on sport and wants to continue promoting sports activities in the middle and low season in order to diversify the tourist offer and attract new demand segments. Sports tourism contributes to the deseasonalisation by promoting the arrival of visitors throughout the year, which contributes to the development of the local economy and employment, thus creating added value for the municipality.
The agreements have been signed by the mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, and secretary of Calvià Foundation and director general of Tourism, Joan Mesquida, attended by the deputy mayor for Tourism, Antonio García Moles, with the companies Engels T.E.C.
