CALVIÀ TOWN HALL LAUNCHES DIFFERENT PROJECTS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF ANIMAL WELFARE AND PROTECTION

Calvià Town Hall allocates 26,000 euros to launch different actions proposed by the citizens of Calvià in the first participatory budgeting that was approved, amongst which are the control of feline colonies.

This year, the amendment of the Animal Welfare Ordinance has been approved with the aim of achieving the highest level of protection and welfare of animals, ensure a responsible tenure and reduce their abandonment, repeated misplacements, uncontrolled procreation, minimising risks for environmental health and preserving the tranquility, health and safety of people, goods and animals.

This sensitivity on animal welfare has been reflected in the citizen proposals that emerged during the participatory budgeting call, related to the improvement of animal protection and feline control and sterilisation.

In this line, a project has been promoted for the ethical management and control of feral cat colonies, through the hiring of a specialist veterinarian, in which are defined the measures and actions necessary for the identification and status of feral colonies, as well as their caregivers and responsibles, to establish the criteria and conditions that must be fulfilled for the stabilisation of feline colonies controlled in the municipality. In addition, greater resources have been provided to carry out support work in the control of feline colonies in Calvià, increasing the cat capture operations to later carry out their sterilisation. To this end, collaboration with the Balearic Platform for the Defence of Animals (BALDEA) has been expanded and improved, with the aim of increasing, reinforcing and optimising the castration of feral and abandoned cats in the municipality.

Parallel to the citizen proposals, a campaign of identification and castration of the domestic cat in Calvià has been started along with all the veterinary clinics of the municipality.

Finally, an Internal Regulation of the Municipal Animal Reception Centre (CAMA) of Calvià Town Hall has been drawn up with the aim of standardising protocols and regulating the operation and management of this municipal centre in order to improve the collection, stay and adoption of animals. Likewise, training actions have been carried out for municipal personnel (police, civil protection, animal welfare staff, etc.), related to animal welfare and protection, thus providing them the necessary knowledge, especially legislative, to face with legal certainty any action or incident that may arise.
