Environmental awareness campaign on the coastline.

 Friday 6th October 2017

The environmental awareness campaign on the coastline of Calvià has included 21 environmental monitoring sessions and 6 educational workshops.

Volunteers from Creu Roja, with the collaboration of Calvià 2000 and Mallorca Live Festival, have toured beaches by kayak and on foot.

The environmental awareness campaign, organised by the Natural and Urban Environment Service of Calvià Town Hall, with the collaboration of Creu Roja, Calvià 2000 and the organisation of the Mallorca Live Festival, has had a total of 21 environmental monitoring sessions and 6 environmental education workshops on the Calvià coastline.

The campaign was developed between June and September, with the participation of Creu Roja volunteers who have toured Calvià beaches to raise awareness and inform the population about the regulations of natural areas and protected species, mainly with reference to oceanic posidonia; as well as on the regulation of waste disposal, especially cigarette butts, cans and wrappings.

The dynamic environmental monitoring has been developed on the beach of Portals Vells by two teams, land and sea. The first has toured the area on foot, delivering reusable nautical ashtrays and cloth bags, and picking up waste in its path; and the second one by kayak, approaching to the boats to inform them on the use of mooring buoys and on the prohibition of anchoring on the posidonia.

In addition to monitoring, this summer environmental education sessions have taken place, which have consisted of workshops and games with children, with educational purposes on the environmental values of the coastline. These activities have been carried out on the beaches of Palmira, El Toro, Santa Ponça, Son Maties, Es Carregador and Oratori.

Balance of the season 2017

The balance of the 2017 season reflects the implementation of 27 activities carried out, with 202 volunteering hours (11 more than the previous summer), 343 informations given, 103 notices of non-compliance with environmental regulations, 245 promotional materials delivered, and 251 ashtrays shared out. As for the Creu Roja's own volunteers valuation about the activities, it has been between "useful" and "very useful".

A novelty of this campaign's edition has been the installation of "colillómetros" on the beach of el Mago, methacrylate ashtrays with the objective of depositing cigarette butts and making tourists and visitors aware of the impact of cigarette butts left on beaches.

This year, the campaign has joined forces with Calvià 2000 and Mallorca Live Festival, as a result of the initiative of the system of reusable glasses, whose collection has been used to finance this environmental awareness project.
