This Wednesday, the Premis Rei En Jaume for Comics, Photography, Theatre and Poetry, convened by Calvià Town Hall, were awarded. The winners are Pere Mas Sureda in Theatre, Jaume Mesquida Sansó in Poetry, Xavier Ferrer Chust in Photography and Antonio Jota Jiménez in Comic. The members of the jury also awarded special mentions to: La Fornal d'Espectacles in Theatre, Marian Driessen Lladó and Sara López Temes in Photography and David José Ruiz Chico in Comic. This contest promotes artistic creation, promotes the cultural activity of the municipality and represents the continuation of more than forty years of tradition in which, at various stages, it has brought together numerous professionals in the field of culture.
The Consistory has taken the opportunity to reaffirm Calvià's commitment to Culture and the intention to give new impetus to the awards in future editions. Manuel Mas, Deputy Mayor for Culture, has assured that “we are already working so that the Rei En Jaume Awards grow, so that they fight on the front line of creation. And you both, winners and contestants, are the soldiers that make it possible, you are the vanguard that will encourage so many others to take the step. There may be plenty of unnecessary things in the world, but never culture. Creating is one of the traits that makes us human.
On her behalf, Isabel Bonet, second Deputy Mayor, has addressed the winners to ask them to be "ambassadors of culture": "invite your friends, tell them that next year they have an appointment with us, tell them to share their work with us. The best thing we can do from Calvià Town Hall is to continue supporting people like you, for your talent and will. And together pave the way for those who are to come.
At the end of the awards ceremony, the dramatised readings of a small part of the texts of the Poetry -"Trossejant la memòria"- and Theatre "Caminar: Calvià" winning works, have taken place. The complete theatre play is expected to premiere in August next year as part of the Festes del Rei En Jaume programme.
