Calvià will light the Santa Ponça mill in red today, Thursday, on the occasion of International Duchenne Awareness Day. On 7th September, tribute is paid to this disease with the aim of raising awareness amongst the population about this pathology that affects around 250.000 children worldwide, especially boys.
Duchenne disease is a serious condition that causes muscular dystrophy and has no cure or treatment. It is characterised by progressive muscle degradation caused by DNA duplication or modification. It is considered one of the so-called “rare diseases”. It is estimated that it currently affects one in every 5.000 children born each year worldwide.
It happens that a child affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy lives in Son Ferrer. Lleó Páez, who is two years old, suffers from this disease which, as his father has explained on the Town Hall's social networks, could leave him confined to a wheelchair before he is twenty years old. His father, Antonio, highlights the need to continue researching this type of pathologies in order to improve the quality of life of those affected.
