This month the Town Hall starts the campaign to minimize the damage that these plagues of caterpillars can cause.

Once again this year the Town Hall of Calvià starts up the fight against the Procesionaria, in order to minimize the damage that they can cause. As of the end of this month, from the municipal Department of the Enviroment, chemical treatment will be started in public areas where there are pine trees as well as the support campaign fior people who need to treat trees on their private property.

This campaign will continue up until mid January as it has been proven that beyond this timescale the treatment becomes less effective and less efficient.. Something new and additional this year is a pilot scheme whereby trees are injected with insecticide and repellants which is a tecnique called Endotherapy. This tecnique enables the chemicals to be distributed throughout the tree by way of the sap. The experiment will be carried out on trees at certain school centres of the municipality.

The Ministry of the Enviroment of the Balearic Government will also be taking action as of the middle of this month in treating rustic areas of pine trees where there is a high risk of problems, this will be done by way of chemicals sprayed into the surrounding atmosphere.

It must be highlighted that this past Summer, the Town Hall has also installed some 400 traps as a preventative measure in the public domain and a furthet 300 have been distributed for private use. This season a drop in the presence of caterpillars has been noted in the pine trees of the municipality of Calvià, this is due to the preventative treatments along with the climate change which has been less favourable for the expansion of the Procesionaria.
