The World Travel Market hosted Calvià's presentation as the world's first municipality to sign an agreement with the Federation of British Tour Operators to promote the system of sustainability "Travelife"
Yet another year, Calvià attended, this week, in London, the World Travel Market - the tourist showcase "par excelence." As in previous years, the Town Hall shared a stand with local hoteliers in order to continue working together in the promotion of the tourist sector.
The government team, lead by Mayor Carlos Delgado, together with Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Kate Mentink and Tourism Director, Antoni Rami, travelled to the WTM, during which they attended an event organised by the British Federation of Tour Operators to announce an agreement between the Director General of the FTO, Andrew Cooper and Mayor Carlos Delgado. The objective of said agreement is to introduce a system of sustainable tourism "Travelife" to holiday establishments in Calvià. This is a distinctive measure of environmental quality, created in 2007, to strengthen environmental and social responsibility in the tourist sector whilst fulfilling the growing demand for environmentally friendly products within tourism.
Calvià is the world's first municipality to sign said agreement with the British FTO, and this will continue until the end of 2010.
This international tourist fair was a platform for the Mayor to confirm his support and commitment to the tourist industry, and to highlight the many developments carried out by the Town Hall in order that Calvià continues to be the tourist destination "par excelence" of the Balearic community. Some of the main achievements are that Calvià has doubled the yearly budget for tourist promotion, and that this month there will be brainstorming meetings for ideas for complete revamping of the tourist resorts of this area.
Furthemore, the Town Hall advocates the modification of the General Tourism Law. and will reimburse 100% of the drainage charges of the winter months to the hotels who open a minimum of 11 months a year.
