The plenary session approves the proposal to request that the Government asks the Secretary of State for Tourism for an agreement of financial collaboration, similar to that signed for the Playa de Palma Plan

The large percentage loss of tourists, which the Balearics has suffered in the last few years is the reason that Carlos Delgados government team raised a proposal, in the plenary session, with a series of actions aimed at addressing the present economic crisis which is having a negative effect on tourism.

Included in the action plan, the Balearic Government is urged to provide material for the promotion of tourism and information, posters, leaflets and tourist information, in general, in, at least, Spanish, English and German. The opinion of the government team, having listened to tour operators and businesses involved in tourism at a national level, is that the inclusion of the Catalan dialect in promotional matters and information for visitors is contributing to the loss of visitors. Therefore, with the clear objective of gaining tourists’ loyalty and achieving a wider projection of what’s on offer, not only in Calvià, but throughout the whole of the Balearic Community, it is necessary to print all posters, leaflets and other material for tourist information in, at least, the three languages previously mentioned.

The proposal, which was discussed in a special plenary session, was approved in spite of having favourable votes only on the part of the government team. The opposition parties (PSOE and UM) voted against the motion.

Now, having been approved, Calvià Town Hall will urge the Balearic Government to apply to the Secretary of State for Tourism for the inclusion of Calvià in the Plan for Spanish Tourism (Plan del Turismo Español), promoted by him. Secondly, the state, regional and insular administrations will be urged to create a consortium to be able to carry out the action plan, more specifically, the Plan for Complete Renovation (Plan de Rehabilitación Integral) of the tourist areas, for which Calvià Town Hall will shortly organize a competition for ideas for the drafting of said plan.

Likewise, the approved proposal includes the urging of the Secretary of State for Tourism to sign an agreement of financial collaboration, similar to that signed for the Playa de Palma Plan, and in proportion to the number of tourist beds in Calvià. The Balearic Government is also asked to begin to make the necessary amendments to the existing urban and tourist legislation to guarantee legal security, which is essential for all sectors involved. Also to facilitate and achieve objectives like the flexibility of the principal of exclusive use, permitting new proposals for the tourist industry like condo-hotels, combined facilities, etc; the development of proposals for the Regulations Plan for Tourist Facilities (Plan de Ordenación de la Oferta Turística) and the Territorial Plan (Plan Territorial), which include the change of the use of certain conditions or facilitate the necessary synergy between tourist and urban regulations.

Finally, the approved proposal includes urging both the regional executive and the Consell de Mallorca to support the creation of the large projects planned for Calvià , like the Theme Park, Conference Building, Technical Sports Centre or the Artificial Reef, which, without doubt, will contribute to the gains from tourism, not only in Calvià but throughout the whole of the Balearic Community.
