Calvià consolidates the deseasonalisation of tourism activity and reduces unemployment by 7.1% during the month of March.

  • Compared to the years 2023 and 2022, the drop in unemployment is even greater, 24.3% and 52.1% respectively

Calvià consolidates the deseasonalisation of tourism activity and records a notable reduction in unemployment of 7.1% in the municipality during the month of March compared to the previous year according to IBESTAT sources. This new drop in unemployment in March reinforces the economic model change that is being worked on in Calvià.

Compared to the years 2023 and 2022, the drops are 24.3% and 52.1% respectively, which confirms a firm downward trend. Compared to pre-pandemic figures, the municipality has achieved a 63.2% reduction in unemployment compared to March 2019, reflecting the impact of active employment policies and the development of tourism activity in the low season, as well as the commitment to greater quality and stability in the labour market.

These percentages are driven by the change in criteria for counting permanent seasonal workers, who represent a large group in Calvià. In any case, Calvià continues to be the Balearic municipality with the best performance in the latest published unemployment data compared to other municipalities of similar size and characteristics.

Furthermore, Calvià Town Hall has fulfilled its commitment to bring forward the start of the beach season this year. This 2025 season, which is getting off to a strong start, is expected to reaffirm the municipality's position as a benchmark for sustainable, accessible, and quality tourism throughout all four seasons.

This past low season have remained open 20% more hotel beds than the previous winter; specifically, a total of 3.331 beds in 2024/25 compared to 2.718 in 2023/24, which were available year-round.  And more than 100 restaurants also remained open in winter, demonstrating that the complementary offer is increasingly able to maintain its business operations beyond the summer months.

All of this, amongst other factors, places Calvià as one of the municipalities best facing the challenges of deseasonalisation and the economic transformation of its local economy. More and more people are coming to Calvià to enjoy the municipality's bounties year-round.

The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, has expressed his satisfaction with the municipality's latest employment figures. He stated that these figures "reflect the work we are doing in terms of the municipality's deseasonalisation," also indicating that one of Calvià's main goals is for permanent seasonal employees to begin working and paying social security contributions year-round. "We are on the right track; I think we are getting there," he added.

This set of indicators reinforces the Town Hall's strategy to diversify the local economy, promote stable employment, and move towards a tourist destination less dependent on seasonality. The sustained improvement in unemployment figures, along with increased activity in the hotel industry and in the complementary offer during the traditionally less active months, demonstrates that Calvià is managing to transform its economic model into one that is more balanced and oriented towards the well-being of residents and visitors year-round.
