Calvià Town Hall awards the 'Cor de Calvià' to oceanographer, biologist, and ecologist Xavier Pastor for his extensive and renowned career.

  • The mayor praised Pastor's role in defending the sea and oceans
  • The former founder and president of Greenpeace España has been a Calvià resident for almost three decades

Calvià Town Hall wanted to recognise oceanographer, biologist, and ecologist Xavier Pastor by awarding him the 'Cor de Calvià' (Heart of Calvià). The distinction, work by Calvià artist Carlos Terroba, was given in recognition of Pastor's invaluable work in promoting the protection and conservation of the oceans, internationally.

The Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, praised Xavier Pastor's career, highlighting his firm commitment to the environment and the defense of the sea, both globally and in his immediate surroundings.

A Cas Català resident for almost three decades, Xavier Pastor has always been involved in the environmental improvement of the municipality and its surroundings, collaborating on projects to conserve and protect marine resources. He currently collaborates with the Marilles Foundation, an entity that works to conserve the Balearic marine environment, contributing his experience to projects and policies that guarantee a sustainable future for our waters.

Calvià Town Hall wanted to publicly recognise his extensive career and commitment, thus joining the tribute recently paid to him by the Sociedad Geográfica Española, awarding him the 2024 National SGE Prize. This award joins him in the select group of great naturalists and disseminators who have received this recognition, including the fondly remembered Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente.

In the words of Xavier Pastor, Calvià "is a place where there is a wonderful life quality, and we want it to be preserved and that the initiatives taken in the municipality are always aimed at improving this life quality, improving the environmental situation, and preventing any deterioration that could affect the environment."

With this gesture, Calvià reinforces its commitment to sustainability and the conservation of the natural environment, values that define the municipality's identity and are reflected in figures like Xavier Pastor.
