• The municipality will go from 18 to 19 entities, the first time that there have been any changes since 1996• The entity will have 4.000 of the municipality's 53.491 residents
Son Caliu is closer to being considered an entity of the municipality of Calvià. This means that the area will be formally delimited and will have its new name. By separating from Palmanova, Calvià will go from 18 to 19 official areas, this being the first change in this regard since 1996. The qualification of entity arises from the request of the Asociación de Vecinos de Son Caliu 5 y 6 (Son Caliu Residents Association 5 and 6).
Son Caliu will be comprised to the west by Palmanova (from Roses Bermejo St.) and to the east by Costa d'en Blanes (up to Saragossa St.). It covers the areas on both sides of the Palma-Andratx regional road (the section of the popular promenade between roundabouts 5 and 6) and includes the sports facilities accessed via Saragossa St. The space of the old Club de Hielo, the commercial area and the Vilas Tennis Academy sports facilities are also integrated. The area will have around 4.000 residents of the 53.491 in the municipality, which will place it sixth in population as it includes Ses Planes, Voramar and Son Caliu Vell. All of this will be notified to the residents by regular mail.
Javier Tascón, councillor for the Son Caliu area, has welcomed the fact that "a historic request from the residents has been met".
A technical committee has drawn up a proposal that has been favourable, has been approved in the Town Hall's Plenary and published in the BOIB (https://www.caib.es/eboibfront/ca/2025/12053/696623/aprovacio-provisional-de-la-creacio-de-l-entitat-s) for which a period of 30 working days is now open for the presentation of allegations and objections that must be addressed and resolved before final approval. It is expected that the project can be formalised once the administrative procedures have been resolved and it has been submitted to the Plenary Session again. The INE (National Institute of Statistics), Registry and Correos (post office) will then be notified.
The 18 areas to which Son Caliu will join are: Badia de Palma (Cala Vinyes), Calvià, Es Capdellà, Cas Català – Illetes, Bendinat, Costa d’en Blanes, Costa de la Calma, Galatzó, Magaluf, Palmanova, Peguera, Sa Porrassa, Portals Nous, Portals Vells, Santa Ponça, Sol de Mallorca, Son Ferrer and El Toro.
