The Mediterranean and the Caribbean come closer together with the twinning of Calvià and Roatán sealed at FITUR.

  • Calvià is a benchmark for tourism in Europe and Roatán takes off as a preferred destination in the Honduran Caribbean
  • Both municipalities will collaborate in training, social affairs, culture, and knowledge exchange
  • The twinning is supported by both Governments Honduras and Balearic Islands and the Consell de Mallorca

The municipalities of Roatán and Calvià have sealed their twinning in an event held at the Madrid Tourism Fair (FITUR) this Wednesday at the Honduras stand. The mayors of both municipalities —Juan Antonio Amengual for Calvià and Ron McNab for Roatán— have signed the document that unites them. The event was attended by Yadira Gómez, Minister of Tourism of Honduras; Marlon Brevé, Honduran Ambassador to Spain; Marcial Rodríguez, Island Councillor for Tourism of the Consell de Mallorca; Josep Aloy, Director General of Tourism of the Government of the Balearic Islands; Elisa Monserrat, Deputy Mayor for Tourism of Calvià and Jaime Bujosa, Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning of Calvià, amongst other authorities, in addition to Juan José Hidalgo, founder of Air Europa.

Amengual said  "We are very happy to find ourselves before a project that is finally becoming a reality and that is going to be a long-term project. We want Roatán to benefit from our experience and knowledge. Being able to help and collaborate with each other motivates us all. We can do a lot for each other. In Calvià we are very proud of the tourism that has given us so much well-being and life quality, a sector that we do not deny''.

McNab explained that “the idea of twinning comes from many years ago. We have a lot to learn, we want to improve the well-being of our land. We change the rules of the game to comply with environmental standards so that they fit in with tourism. We are facing reforms and improvements to ports and airport, roads and drinking water and sewage networks. We are very interested in the example of Calvià’s water management. We want to achieve the same level of development and life quality for our citizens as we have seen in Calvià.”

The Minister of Tourism of Honduras, Yadira Gómez, said that she “feels great joy for this brotherhood of Honduras and the mother country. Tourism is a source of development for our communities.” For his part, Josep Aloy has expressed the support of the Balearic Islands Government: "We are working hand in hand with Calvià Town Hall in this twinning, which will generate other agreements in the future".

The municipality of Roatán, located in the Bay Islands of Honduras, is one of the emerging destinations for Caribbean tourism. A delegation from the local government headed by Mayor Ron McNab visited Calvià last October to hold a series of bilateral meetings with different departments of the Town Hall. Calvià Town Hall has stressed the responsibility of the twinning and the benefit it will bring to both parties in terms of training, social and cultural collaboration, and knowledge exchange.
