On September 7 and November 4, 2017, earthquakes occurred in the area of Chiapas, in the province of San Marcos, with serious consequences, especially in the border areas with Mexico. According to official data, Tacaná was the most affected location with hundreds of affected families who lost their houses, making it very difficult to rebuild them.
Faced with this situation, Calvià City Council signed an agreement with the objective of granting a subsidy of €10,000 to the Mallorcan Solidarity and Cooperation Fund due to the social emergency that occurred. With this aid, the aim is to build basic 24m2 homes with cement pavement for eight indigenous families (48 people in total), who will provide unskilled labor.
Among the milestones that are intended to be achieved is the intention to strengthen the resilience of the eight families affected by the earthquakes in the municipality of Tacaná through the process of housing reconstruction and social reintegration, and on the other hand, facilitate the access to basic housing for them.
