Mayor Carlos Delgado presents in Wales and Scotland the new rugby pitch and the indoor swimming-pool in Son Caliu
Calvià, tourist destination "par excellance" of the balearic community, continues with its intense tourist promotion and therefore a municipal group representation , headed by Mayor Carlos Delgado, travelled this week to Wales and Scotland to present a complete offer of Calvià and, especially, the new sports complex consisting of a rugby pitch and an indoor swimming-pool which is being built in Son Caliu and ,which no doubt, will become a point of reference of the sports offer and active tourism of Calvià at a national and international level.
This new instalation, which from now on will be together with the athlethics track in Magaluf, one of the main elements in all promotional fairs and events to which the Town Hall will attend.It has been launched in Cardiff and in Bristol Bay, where the oval ball sport creates excitement and is, together with football, the most popular sport.
The Mayor, accompanied by the Calvià Sport Institute manager, Manuel Onieva and by the director for Tourism of the town hall, Jaime Martínez, made the presentation of the rugby pitch to the representatives of various teams in the capital of Wales who applaud the quality of this new sports complex, built with the latest technology and the most modern materials, and also its situation ; -Calvià excellent beaches; its first class hotels and facilities and ideal mediterranean climate which permits sporting activities throughout the whole year.
First Wales and later Edinburgh
The rugby pitch was also presented in Edinburgh, in which the city Mayor, George Grubb attended this event; the President of the Scottish Rugby Federation , Jim Stevenson and Kirsty MacKay, the Rugby national coordinator, as well as other representatives of various rugby teams and tour operators. On the other hand, the presentation scheduled in Dublín had to be cancelled due to the closing of Irish air space as a result of the volcanic Eyjafjalla ashes. Nevertheless, in view of the interest expressed by numerous rugby teams and from the Federation, this sports facilities will be introduced in the coming months in Dublin.
The new approved rugby pitch measures 112x67metres ,with state of the art artificial grass and 70mm of fibre glass and stands. Also there is a service building with changing rooms with capacity for four different teams at a time; the referees´s changing rooms and the social center. The heated swimming-pool measures 25x12,5m and is provided with changing rooms,rest rooms and offices. All this,is surrounded by a parking space with room for 80 vehicles.
More than 50 sport facilities
This new sports complex joins a long list of more than 50 sports facilities, both public and private which make Calvia an ideal destination for sport lovers and active tourism.Since Carlos Delgado became Mayor, sport has been a major focus as an integrating element and a means of diversifying human and cultural values ,without affecting tourist promotion.Thus, enabling Calvia to become an international reference for the practice of sport and in the organization of big sport events. An example of this , is the championship as celebrated at the athlethics track in Magaluf last July in which more than 600 athletes got together and in which promising national and locals were present, and which will be repeated in the following months.
We have to highlight the promotion of the new rugby pitch and the new indoor swimming-pool, in Scotland and Wales, the Mayor Carlos Delgado has also promoted another great tourist attraction in Calvià, the public Galatzó estate, vital for all trekking, cyclingtourism and nature lovers in general.
