The consistory solves the microalgae problem on the Palmira beach, fact that made the water become green, after the formal complaint made by the Peguera-Cala Fornells Hotel Association.

Successful experimental test on Palmira beach.

The Calvià Town Hall has successfuly superseded an experimental test made to alleviate the effects that the microalgae caused in the Palmira beach water, which turned the water green and which provoked the complaints of both, users and tourists.

The Town Hall received numerous complaints last summer because of the yellowish colour of Palmira beach. The cause of this colouring is motivated by the high presence and concentration of a microalgae (Alexandrium taylori) which its photosynthetic pigments give this colouring to the water of the sea, giving a less attractive appearance and with almost the total loss of its transparency.

Various municipal technical services (Highways and Works, Environment and the Department of Waters of Calvià 2000) decided to design and carry out an experimental test, under the awareness and the authorization of the Coastal Demarcation to try to end up with those pigments in the water. This experience consisted of pumping the fresher and deeper waters towards the interior of the Palmira beach cove with the intention of both, reducing the temperature a few degrees and increasing the renovation of the waters.

After these months of following-up of the experimented system in July and August, (which are the months with more growth and development of this microalgae), through periodical visual inspections, the carrying out of analysis and of gathering the possible complaints or incidents of the beach users, it has been concluded that the experience has had a very positive outcome as the episodes of the colouring of the waters have been minimum, specific in small areas of the beach and practically insignificant by the users.

During the course of these last weeks, the Town Hall has received numerous calls from various areas of the Mediterranean coast, due to the results of the test, interested in the characteristics and the conditions in which the experiment has been carried out.
