THE UNIVERSITY CENTRE OF CALVIÀ CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY

During these 20 years the CUC has awarded scholarships to more than 130 students and more than 10.000 participants and users have passed by its premises

The University Centre of Calvià, pioneer in the Balearic Islands, has celebrated its twentieth anniversary, in an event which has counted on the presence of a good part of the Calvian consistory, headed by the Mayor Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, and by the vice rectors of Cultural Projection and Open University, Joana Maria Seguí Pons, and Graduate Pupils and Employability, Margalida Payeras.

The University Centre of Calvià, CUC, is a project which was promoted in 1995 from the Calvià Town Hall, answering to the objective of promoting university studies, and create tools and resources to encourage and strengthen associationism actions and bet for a healthy and ludic leisure. It was the first one to be introduced in the Balearic Islands. It arised from the hand of the UIB, and later, also, with the UNED.

In its commencement the CUC was managed, apart from the figure of the technician-coordinator, by a team of students and university graduates who were undertaking a scholarship in the same centre. This figure has been a key element during these years and it can be said that the grant holders have been one the main reasons of the CUC's success, as with their motivation and knowledge they have been able to inform of the necessities of the youths. The CUC has been characterised by taking a very active role within the dynamisation of cultural and sports activities, the dynamisation of areas of the municipality, at the IES (Obligatory Secondary Education Schools) of Calvià, etc., being, furthermore, outstanding in many actions such as the activation of European projects- youth exchanges-, support in the graffities and skate movements, or encouraging musical actions, such as the realisation of Art Jove in Calvià, the creation of music bands, or Calvià Hip Hop.

In 2004 the CUC was managed from the Social Cohesion Department (Education), diverting the most ludic and sociocultural part to the Department of Youth. As from 2005, and coinciding with the inauguration of the new premises, they contemplated other strategies focused on the education field, but never losing the CUC's essence.

Throughout these 20 years, have passed by the CUC more than 130 grant holders, more than 10.000 participants and users; more than 9.500 University Bus journeys have been realised, and more than 43.000 hours have been carried out in the centre.

The CUC's current purpose is the promotion of actions to facilitate the access and the continuity of high studies. It is working to strengthen the academic and vocational orientation, and put at disposal of the youths resources and tools to improve their academic and professional career. Currently, from the CUC, services adapted to the municipality's demand are offered such as: University Bus, schedule extension during period of exams, 70 points of study, teamwork rooms, student performance workshops, orientation sessions and vocational advice, more than 150 distance courses through agreement with the Ministry of Education, non formal and informal education actions, post-secondary education information, etc.

Now, it is working to activate new projects, and create and strengthen bonds with essential education agents such as the IES, the families, the UIB (University of the Balearic Islands), and the youths, the preuniversity and graduate students.

During the course of the event, they wanted to show their gratitude for the contribution and involvement of all those who were and are part of this project: IES Calvià, IES Son Ferrer, IES Bendinat, CEPA, Culture, ICE, IFOC, Es Generador, Radio Calvià, UNED, FUEIB and UIB.
